Termite and Pest Control in Port St Lucie and the Surrounding Areas

Florida's boom in real estate over the last 60 years and favorable climate make it not a popular location for people, but for termites as well. Generally considered the "buggiest state" - Stuart, Jensen Beach, Palm City, Port St Lucie, Jupiter, Fort Pierce, Vero Beach and the surrounding areas can be considered some of the nation's most tempted targets for termites.

While cooler parts of the nation experience termite seasons, Florida's subtropical climate allows termite populations to grow and flourish year-round. Additionally, Florida's suburban nature provides large yards for termite populations to grow in and tasty wood homes for them to invade.

Florida is home to three distinct species of termites, each of which contain several subspecies. Subterranean termites live in colonies of up to a million and travel in dirt tunnels they construct. Formosan termites are a non-native species introduced by returning World War II warships in the mid-to-late 1940s. Similar to native subterranean termite species, Formosan species often form underground colonies of several million and can eat a tremendous amount of wood in a short period of time. Drywood termites do not create tunnels or make nests in soil, choosing instead to nest in wood itself. It should be noted that, in addition to wood and paper, most species of termites will happily eat drywall as well.

Increasingly, termites seem to be traveling on ground (and underground) instead of swarming. Homeowners often call exterminators when they notice a swarm, yet many neglect annual checks, allowing non-swarming termites to go unchecked.

Subterranean Termites exist almost everywhere there is soil.  In Florida on average there are 3-5 active termite colonies per acre of land. On average there are 60,000 working termites in every colony.  They swarm in the spring and fall between the hours of 11am and 3pm. They do more damage than all natural disasters combined each year in Florida.  They do more than $750,000 in damage each year in Florida and over $3 billion in damage each year in the United States.

Homeowners insurance doesn’t cover termite damage. An average size colony can eat 1 foot of loblolly pine every 118 days. All homes are vulnerable new, old, wood, stucco, or block.  They only need 1/64th of an inch to enter.
